Director of Racquet Sports
Job Description
The Director of Racquet Sports at Mesa Verde Country Club oversees and innovates the club’s racquet sports programs, including tennis, pickleball, and other racquet sports that appeal to all levels and ages. This leadership role is focused on enhancing member engagement through exceptional service, strategic programming, and meticulous facility maintenance.
Responsibilities and Tasks
Racquet Sports Management and Operations
• Oversee daily operations of the Racquet Sports Department, including staff professionalism, facility maintenance, and member experience.
• Manage cleanliness, upkeep, and appearance of the Racquet Center and surrounding grounds.
• Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring compliance with club policies and industry best practices.
Program Development and Member Engagement
• Create and promote a comprehensive racquet sports program, including tournaments, leagues, events, clinics, and private lessons for all ages and skill levels.
• Develop and implement youth programming, providing group and individual instruction to foster young players’ skills and promote a lifelong enjoyment of racquet sports.
• Deliver stroke instruction tailored to various skill levels, ensuring members receive high-quality coaching that emphasizes proper techniques, form, and personal improvement.
• Direct and coordinate the formation of club league teams, ensuring alignment with member interests.
• Organize, officiate, and oversee tournaments, exhibitions, and social events.
• Plan and lead instructional programs, ensuring teaching methods align with current trends and best practices.
Staff Management and Development
• Recruit, train, and lead racquet sports staff, fostering an environment of coaching excellence and exceptional service.
• Prepare staff schedules, evaluate staff performance, and oversee professional development programs.
Financial and Inventory Management
• Prepare annual operating and capital budgets for the Racquet Sports Department.
• Manage department finances, track expenditures, and provide variance reports.
• Oversee the Pro Shop’s financial operations, including inventory control, equipment repairs, and event registration/billing.
Facility and Equipment Management
• Coordinate maintenance and repair of courts and related facilities, ensuring they are maintained to the highest standard.
• Manage cleaning and maintenance of patio areas, clubhouse, and other racquet facilities.
• Collaborate with the Facilities and Golf Course Maintenance departments for upkeep.
Member Relations and Communication
• Actively engage with members, providing high-quality service and handling inquiries related to racquet sports.
• Develop and manage communication for racquet sports events, including newsletters, social media, and email blasts.
Collaboration with Other Departments
• Work closely with the Food and Beverage team to coordinate services for racquet sports events.
• Serve as a liaison to the Racquet Committee, ensuring alignment with member expectations and club goals.
Committee and Board Interaction
• Attend relevant committee and board meetings, providing reports and feedback on the racquet sports department’s operations and initiatives.
Other Responsibilities
• Maintain regular attendance on Mesa Verde Country Club property.
• Ensure compliance with club policies and employment laws.
• Stay visible on courts during peak times.
• Represent the club at professional racquet sports events and participate in related committees.
Required Education, Experience, or Certifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
• Education and/or Experience
o A bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.
o At least 3-5 years of progressive racquet sports management experience in a high-caliber club environment is preferred.
• Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
o Professional certification in tennis or pickleball is required (e.g., USPTA or PTR for tennis, PPR for pickleball).
o Certification with the American Platform Tennis Association (APTA) is highly desirable but not required.
o Membership with USTA or another recognized racquet sports organization is preferred.
o Demonstrated high-level playing ability, preferably NCAA Division 1 level or equivalent, is a plus.
o CPR and First Aid certifications are a plus.
